Technical knowledges and Environmental adaptations to the inughuit hunters of narwhal.

This project is an anthropological study of the hunting of narwhal by Inughuit in the Northwest of Greenland. We want to go futrher into the specificities of this hunting articulating an traditional technique, an individual perfection of the equipment and an aesthetic of the personal adress of the hunter. These practices of the most northerly hunters were partially described only by the explorers of the XIXth and XXth century. By following the hunters in spring on their dogsledges, and in summer in kayak, we shall look for connections existing between the techniques, the individual strategies, the equipments and the collective standards of sharing in the community. This field study will be the first one to look for how the inughuit hunters of narwhal adapt themselves in context in fast evolution.
