Sexual microbiome and reproduction in a genetically monogamous Arctic seabird

In humans, and several animal model species, the reproductive microbiome is recognized to play a critical role on male and female health and reproduction. In contrast, despite its potential significance on sexual selection, research on the reproductive microbiome of wild animals is rare. In the “SexualRepro Arctic2” project, we will investigate the role of the reproductive microbiome on fitness and the evolution of reproductive behaviors in the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), a sexually monogamous seabird. We will study a population breeding on Middleton Island, Alaska, where artificial nest sites have been created on the upper walls of an abandoned radar tower, permitting observations from inside through sliding one-way windows.
